Kenai,
Alaska “Feast of the Last Frontier”
September 23 - October 1, 2018
Site Summary
We
are Mark & Linda Roth, Jeff & Emily Kewin, and
Dave Johnson, longtime Alaskans that have kept the feasts of the Lord
for many years now and have decided to come together in the spirit of
unifying the body of Messiah in our state. While we live 5 hours one
way from each other and have different fellowships and differing
backgrounds, we have decided to sponsor the first ever outdoor
gathering for the Feast of Sukkot in Alaska. Our theme is “Come Let’s Go Up to the Mountain”
in honor of our Great God and is symbolized by Alaska being home of the
tallest mountain in North America right here in the Last Frontier!
We want to create an atmosphere of community and fellowship to
really enjoy our time with each other. As such, there are no
special speakers planned, but we look forward to each person
contributing the riches our
Father has given them, with compassion and
respect as we love our neighbor as ourselves.
We will have daily dance
workshops for Hebrew dance by our very own son, Jason Kewin.
Jason has led, choreographed, and taught dance at the Chandler, OK
Sukkot, where our family has spent the Feast since 2006 when he was a
teen. He even manages to get the men in the circle! (Mom brag
here).
The Bible says to bring an offering - even daily - and we see how that
can be fulfilled in many ways: by sharing ideas, spiritual experiences,
Bible study facts and inspirations, willing hands to help, watchful
eyes, alert spirits. We would also like to bless the camp financially
and help out with small work projects, as the Spirit leads and the need
arises.
We have some talented local people who do plan on
contributing
some
of their craft talents and sharing some of their skills. For instance,
there is a fellow who I believe is going to teach those who are
interested how to skin an animal. We also have some superb
fish
filleters and hunters. We plan on making some interesting
lulav’s
which will be from local materials, which we have done every year that
we kept Sukkot in Alaska.
Location of Services and Accomodations
We have located and contracted with The
Diamond M Resort Ranch in Kenai, Alaska to
hold the event on their beautiful property and active ranch which
offers full hook up RV sites, some cabins, bunkhouses and several
multi-room suites, and tent sites. They offer private clean shower
facilities
and bathrooms, a Frisbee golf course, swings for the kids, farm tours
with a bit of a petting “zoo” of goats/sheep, fish cleaning stations,
and several large bonfire areas. They are located just off of
the
Kenai River which has fishing, boating and many area Alaskan
activities.
We are renting a large tent for our worship and dance times along with group activities during the day should the weather become inclement. This is Alaska, after all, which can become cool at this time of year along with perhaps a bit of rain. Alaskans are pretty casual about dress since this is the Last Frontier. Even though this is a “resort”, it is Alaskan style so hiking shoes, jeans, t-shirts and fleece is best on a daily basis. Shorts and tank tops just won’t work though we do dress in skirts for dance and Shabbat. (Some of us ladies even wear skirts over leggings if it is cold….hint hint)

They have offered our group a discount of 10% on all accommodations and 20% on RV sites. Diamond M Ranch would like the discounted reservations to be made by August 1, 2018. Visit the Lodgings page to see what they have available and then call (907) 283-9424 to book. Remember to ask for either the Sukkot Group or Feast of the Last Frontier in order to get the discount.
RV Rentals:
Many Alaskans have an RV but it is common for summer visitors to rent RVs locally. Here are those companies that we have contacted for possible rentals if you are interested. There are also many smaller companies and personal rental units available to be found with an internet search. Since this is our first Sukkot of this type here in Alaska, we are not able to get group rates until perhaps a future year when we have a better idea of how many attendees could be renting RVs for this event.
Meals
The first evening we will offer classic Alaskan fare which will include salmon burgers, chips, and salad BBQ fashion. Our site does not have a kitchen/dining area per se but the Owners of Diamond M have an area where we can BBQ and gather on occasion. As such, we suggest you provide for breakfast and lunch for yourselves and plan on share-a-dishes throughout the feast as we make new friends and reconnect with old, contributing to the evening meal fellowship style, whether in small groups or all of us together. This is definitely an event where we can return to the old American way of borrowing a cup of sugar from our neighbor. There is a Walmart within a few miles of our site and also a full service Fred Meyer’s should you forget anything at home.
